It is hard to imagine the extent of the damage, one calculation indicates that the power of the quake was equivalent to 500 Hiroshima bombs. It is said that there are about 45 million people (equivalent to the population of California or Spain) directly effected by the quake and over 14 million refugees. There are all sorts lurking dangers; epidemics, collapsing lakes and slides are among the most feared. For me, the numbers are numbing, hard to grasp, easy to dismiss. Perhaps this set of pictures, prepared by care givers, help us a little better understand and feel the human dimension It is wonderful to see how the entire country is responding - it is not only the government, the armed forces and the care givers but the people across the nation. Solidarity and the value of social capital are clearly evident. There is much need to weep and to mourn, much to do and there will be for years and yet there is much to celebrate and so much to learn.
